Lessons Learned

About two weeks ago, I lost the USB flash drive that I carried everywhere. The drive had all my E-mail since 2002, a database containing almost all of my passwords and some documents and presentations. Luckily, I had a recent back-up, so I only lost (at most) three days of E-mail (Lesson #1: Always Backup).

I have been using an open source application called Keepass to store and encrypt my passwords, so I don’t have to worry about changing all of my passwords (Lesson #2: Have strong passwords and protect them).

Lesson #3 (protect personal information) is a tad problematic. My documents were not encrypted. Looking through my backed-up files, I found some documents containing personal information, some things I’d rather not have in unknown hands. My next USB flash drive will be encrypted using another open source application called Truecrypt. Once the encrypted file or folder is mounted, Truecrypt encrypts information on-the-fly, very easy to use. The next time I lose my flash drive (and I will lose it), all the finder will have is a slightly used flash drive, not pieces of my identity.
