So you want help installing Windows XP? Well here is some screenshots and notes on
installing Windows XP
   
STEP 1
Make sure all data is backup on machine before doing any of this. Check your backup on another
machine to make sure you can see all the data and it is useable. Have all the updates to Windows XP
on a CD and anti-virus software with updated definitions ready to install after WinXP is install.
You will also need to collect the driver or hardware information from your computer, incase
Windows XP does not have a driver for your hardware. You will need to get that from the original CD
that came with it or download it from the manufactures website. A good program to collect all the hardware
information from your computer is Belarc Advisory. ( This is free for personal use )
 IMPORTANT:  unplug network cable before installing Windows XP and leave it un-plugged until after
all the patches and anti-virus software is installed and updated. A virus or worm is
very possible to get while the machine is installing. You will also need to get information ready like,
workgroup name or domain name, machine name from your Tech so all installs are done with
knowledge from your Tech.
STEP 2
Put Windows XP CD in CD-ROM and re-start computer and let the computer boot to the CD.
It will come up and say " PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT TO CD" you will need to to that.
You may have to change the boot order in BIOS to make the CD-ROM boot first.
STEP 4
You will see a blue screen somewhat like this one below. You must hit ENTER to continue.
 
   
STEP 5
Next you will see the license information that Microsoft makes you read and agree to before you can
proceed with the install. Press F8 to Agree
 
   
STEP 6
Next it should ask you where you want to install on your computer. (note: this is if you want to
partition your drive or you have multiple drives to install on). Choose where to install or Create a
Partition and Press the ENTER button to proceed.
 
   
STEP 7
Next it will ask you how to format the drive for installing. (Note: NTFS is only for WinXP and Win2K)
You can choose either the quick or not. Use your Arrow keys to highlight, then press ENTER
 
   
STEP 8 It will format and start coping files, the install will begin soon with more questions.
 
   
STEP 9
After all the files have been copied, it will reboot and then start asking questions. Let it restart
and not not press any buttons until you see the next screen on STEP 10.
 
   
STEP 10
As the install goes on, one of the first questions you will get is, setting the Regional and Language.
Just press the NEXT Button to proceed.
 
   
STEP 11
The install will then ask for a name and Organization. This is the name that the software will be
registered under. (Note: A name must be entered to proceed but not a organization)
Press the NEXT Button to proceed.
 
   
STEP 12
After the name and organization comes the Product Key to install the software.
Note: No product Key,, No installing Windows XP, it will not go any farther).
Press NEXT to Proceed.
 
   
STEP 13
After you have gave it a Product Key, it will want to set the computers name and Administrator
Password. You will want to ask your Tech what the correct naming convention they are using.
Also a admin password. Press NEXT when all is complete.
 
   
STEP 14 Set the correct date/time and time zone and you are on the home stretch. Press NEXT.
 
   
STEP 15
Usually you would pick ( Typical Settings ) but check with your tech to make sure they
do not want anything special here.  Press NEXT to proceed....
 
   
STEP 16
Now you will need to check with your tech once again on how to setup the office network.
A Workgroup will be important down the road when sharing files or printers.
Press NEXT to proceed.
 
   
STEP 17
You have now finished installing Windows XP when the machine reboots. This screen should
be your last screen before rebooting install the newly installed Windows XP operating system.
 
   
STEP 18
You should have patches ready to install from a CD and anti-virus software with updated DAT
files before plugging into the network. If the machine is not patched or anti-virus is not up to date,
chances are very high that you will get a virus before your install in complete if you leave the
network cable plugged in during install.
   
STEP 19 After the re-boot and you are in Window XP, you may have to install drivers for hardware that,

you collected at the beginning of these steps.
